Inner Family Letter (As presented at recovery workshop, October 2023)

Hi To All of My Inner Family Members

Today I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to a new family member and that is Our Loving Parent. Our Loving Parent is here to listen to all of you. She wants to validate all of your thoughts, feeling and emotions. She is offering each and every one of you her unconditional love, compassion and emotional support at all times. She will never abandon you or neglect you. She is here to protect you and to show you what compassion and caring and kindness looks like. She will never judge you or criticize you or belittle you. She has a heart full of love and respect for all of you. She wants you to know she will listen to all your concerns. She will help you work through difficult emotions that may come up for you. She will be a part of our inner family system for the rest of our lives.

She wants you to know that she is not a mind reader. She will encourage you to use your voice so she can support you and help you. Remember she is there for all of you. Our Loving Parent is there to listen and validate each and every one of you.

A special word to The Critical Parent from The Loving Parent. The Loving Parent wants you to know that she respects you and appreciates you. She knows that ultimately you have always wanted what was best for us. You motivated us to do the next right thing. But sometimes your words and actions were harsh, degrading, scary, and loud. The Loving Parent wants to help guide you to tone down your voice and to talk in a kinder, gentler, soft way when you are speaking to any of the Inner Family Members.

The Loving Parent believes we can all learn to accept and care for each other. We can create he best version of our True Self. WE can learn to live a more balanced inner life and external life. We can all begin to experience true happiness, inner peace and joy.

I hope each and every one of The Inner Family Members take time to get to know our Inner Loving Parent and trust she is there to support us at all times.

The ultimate goal is to become the best version of our True Self and to live the rest of our life happy, joyous and free.

Recovery Book Review: Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents

During the COVID lock-downs I've done some recovery reading. My current book is Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay Gibson (New Harbinger Publications, 2015). Usual disclaimer: The views expressed here are the author's personal views. Also, as this blog belongs to a 12-Step/12-Tradition organization, we are not engaged in affiliate linking or any promotional or revenue-sharing scheme. There is no financial interest in this book review. The book's title attracted me because it's exactly on-theme for my recovery goals. The book's early chapters -- which I think of as "The Problem" chapters -- focused on the immature parents. Here the author presents an often-harsh, frequently "other-izing" view. I expect that I looked at my parents that way before I had adult children of my own. Now, having my own parenting mistakes and having been immature (ACA) as I raised my own children, I found "The Problem" chapters with ...

Pro-Tips for your ACA Daily Reader

Did you know that the ACA Daily Reader has some hidden features? Strengthening My Recovery  is organized in ways you might never expect:  The promise of the month is always the topic for the 15th of that month (January 15 for Promise One, February 15 for Promise Two, etc).  The step of the month is always on the 3rd of the month (Step One on January 3, Step Two on February 3, etc).  The tradition of the month is trickier: it's always the next-to-last reading of the month. That means it's on the 30th for 31-day months like January, on the 29th for 30-day months like April, and on the 28th in February! So the tradition is on a different day depending on the length of the month, but always the next-to-last reading of the month.  Next time you're looking for a reading on a particular step, tradition, or promise, you'll have a fast way to find it. Hat tip to the editors for being organized. : )
